Teachers' Section - National Curriculum

The study of water provides a wealth of opportunities for valuable work in various important areas of the Key Stage 2 curriculum, developing pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills linked to water-related topics and to broader issues such as sustainability and citizenship.

The following Units from the QCA documents are particularly relevant:

Science

Unit 4D - solids, liquids and how they can be separated (dissolving, sieving and filtering)

Unit 5C - gases around us(uses and properties of gases)

Unit 5D - changing states (Water cycle, condensation, evaporation)

Unit 6B - microorganisms (useful and harmful microbes)

Unit 6C - more about dissolving (solutions, mixtures, purity)

Geography

Unit 6 - investigating our local area

Unit 8 - improving the environment

Unit 11 - water

Unit 14 - investigating rivers

PSHE

A healthy lifestyle incorporates the importance of drinking water and its role in maintaining good health and emphasises water’s place in personal hygiene and washing.

Objective 3 of the Healthy Living Blueprint which helps schools support children in leading a healthy lifestyle, states that Drinking water should be available to pupils throughout the day at a number of points within a school, and not from taps or drinking fountains in the toilets. Anglian Water fully supports this policy.

Independent learning

The information presented on the website is structured in such a way that the pupils’ independent research skills are also developed. This is supported by an interactive glossary feature.

Other curricular areas

Aspects of areas such as ICT, Literacy, Numeracy, Citizenship and ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) are also covered.

A very useful document has recently been posted on the Teachernet website at www.teachingnet.gov.uk called the Water Zone curriculum map.

This guide for teachers identifies the location of water-related topics in the National Curriculum for England and suggests a wide range of teaching and learning activities linked to each curricular area.
